Productivity isn’t a luxury

According to the Office of National Statistics, UK employee productivity continues to lag behind our main European competitors, ONS. Couple this with the fact that only 59% of surveyed employees believe their well-being was good or excellent, Deloitte. Now is the time to act…

Sitting for prolonged periods even in the most ergonomic chair is linked to higher risks of chronic disease, as well as the more obvious impact on our lower back, shoulders, and neck. When deadlines are looming we often, unconsciously, tense and hunch our shoulders. Experiencing pain and discomfort serves as a warning. Long-term pain also increases the risk of developing chronic health conditions that can impact your overall quality of life, productivity at work and personal relationships. Now, add our reliance on smartphones, tablets and laptops and we can really put our body through ‘through the mill’.

Evidence suggests UK employees would benefit from assistance to improve their performance and health. Tactics enabling staff to work smarter, not harder will help UK companies compete on both the domestic and international markets. Companies are increasingly turning to on-site office massage to help their employees both physically and mentally perform better at work. Like other productivity initiatives massage makes good business sense, especially considering such as low cost and high potential ROI.

EMPLOYEE FEEDBACK

Take a few minutes to ask colleagues if they think they would benefit from a short break and a rejuvenating massage whilst at work.

While there are ample scientific papers extolling the benefits of general massage, few studies have systematically examined the effectiveness of massage therapy at work. One study that has is Arla Day et als 2009 study which found that both muscle strain and blood pressure were significantly reduced during massage treatment, offering preliminary evidence supporting the effectiveness of workplace-based massage therapy.

They conclude, “massage therapy treatment offered to employees as a health benefit directly in the workplace may be a practical, enjoyable, and cost-effective means to reduce strain and blood pressure, and increase general health, creating a safer, healthier workplace.” So, introducing short breaks and relieving office massage can potentially buffer the damaging effects of office work and daily stress.
